How Our Process Works

Initial Consultation

In our initial consultation, prior to testing the psychologist gathers information about concerns, and developmental and learning history, and develops the individualized testing plan, if needed.

Personalized Assessment

Based upon individual needs, we assess for learning cognitive and/or psychological concerns and make recommendations tailored to your strengths and needs.

Follow Up

We provide feedback and help implement recommendations. We provide consultation to schools, case managers, and other providers.

Types of Evaluations for Children and Adults:

Dyslexia & Learning Disorders

Catch Kids Before They Fail: Ages 5 – 7. This early learning evaluation helps identify emerging cognitive and early academic skills, relative strengths and weaknesses among different cognitive abilities and potential for reading problems, and provides recommendations for early evidence-based interventions.


Comprehensive Evaluation for Dyslexia and/or Other Learning Concerns (e.g., math, writing)

This comprehensive evaluation assesses factors causing a child or adult to struggle with reading, spelling, or other learning problems, and provides a formal diagnosis and recommendations. Dyslexia and other learning problems frequently co-occur with other problems, such as ADHD. We evaluate the processing deficits that often underlie learning difficulties. Identifying the causes of the learning difficulty and evaluating a person’s underlying strengths and weaknesses helps to understand why you or your child learns and provides valuable individualized recommendations and educational strategies.


Targeted Dyslexia Evaluation for Adults. Designed for adults with a history of reading problems who require formal diagnosis for accommodations but who don’t require the comprehensive assessment described above.

ADHD

ADHD Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation for Children & Adults. This includes the following:

a) behavioral questionnaires from parents and teachers,


b) clinical interview to obtain developmental, learning and behavioral history, and description of current difficulties, and

c) assessment of attention and underlining cognitive processes (e.g., executive functioning, working memory, processing speed) and possible alternative diagnoses.

d) written summary of findings with recommendations;

e) verbal feedback session. Whether co-occurring difficulties are likely to be present or if there is a more appropriate diagnosis.

 

Progress Monitoring. This brief evaluation is for those who have undergone a previous evaluation and been diagnosed with an attention deficit disorder. It is designed to determine if progress is adequate.

 

Targeted ADHD Evaluation for Adults. Designed for adults with a previous diagnosis of ADHD who require formal diagnosis for accommodations but who don’t require the comprehensive assessment described above.

Psychological Evaluations

Assessment & Diagnosis of Anxiety Disorders, Depression, & Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Evaluations include a thorough diagnostic interview, review of past records, and administration of empirically based measures to arrive at appropriate diagnoses. Clients will receive a written report containing diagnoses and recommendations for future treatment. Emphasis is on identifying underlying clinical issues, client’s personality and providing the referring clinician with specific therapeutic recommendations. 

Neuropsychological Evaluations

A neuropsychological evaluation is recommended when there is a suspected impairment in cognition, memory, or behavior due to brain injury, impairment, or disease. Neuropsychology focuses on complex developmental and medical/neuropsychological disorders. The neuropsychologist uses knowledge of brain development, brain organization, and the effects of various forms of brain injury and disease on development and functioning to guide the assessment.

Aviation 

Aviation psychology focuses on the unique psychological factors associated with meeting the demands of various aspects of aviation, including piloting and air traffic control. These evaluations are conducted according to the federal standards and criteria necessary for medical certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Evaluations are provided by a CogScreen-AE and HIMS trained neuropsychologist or psychologist.

Vocational evaluations assess an individual’s interests, aptitudes and abilities in order to assist with career planning, training, and employment. Evaluations help determine what career areas an individual is most suited for based on their personality traits, interests, strengths, and weaknesses. This type of evaluation is particularly helpful for high school-aged students interested in exploring college majors and career options, college students considering career options, and adults who may be changing careers by choice or by necessity.

    Neuroeducation combines the latest research in the areas of cognitive neuroscience, education, and psychology in understanding how people think, learn, and act. Expertise in all three of these knowledge areas is crucial in understanding reading, memory, attention, and other cognitive or learning impairments. Our psychologists utilize all three areas in their neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations.

  • What is a Psychoeducational Evaluation?

    A psychoeducational evaluation determines if your person has a learning disability or other issues that negatively impact his or her ability to learn. It assesses academic levels, executive functioning, and information-processing abilities. These evaluations also consider emotional and behavioral functioning and their impact on the person's academic performance.

  • What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

    Neuropsychology is a specialty within the field of psychology that focuses on complex developmental and medical/neurological disorders. A neuropsychological evaluation includes clinical and collateral interviews, standardized tests, and observations of behavior to understand how a person thinks, learns, remembers, and acts. The neuropsychologist uses knowledge of brain development, brain organization, and the effects of various forms of brain injury on development to guide this assessment and interpret the results.

  • How do I know what type of evaluation I need?

    Every evaluation is customized to meet the needs of each client. During your initial contact, which is always with a licensed psychologist or neuropsychologist, you and the psychologist will be able to discuss what your needs are and what type of evaluation will best meet these needs. 

  • Do you only accept child patients?

    We also have assessments specifically for adults with learning, attention, memory, or other concerns. 

  • Do your aviation evaluations meet FAA standards?

    Yes. These evaluations are conducted according to Federal standards and criteria necessary for medical certification by the FAA.

  • How long does an evaluation take?

    The length of evaluations varies, depending on the type of evaluation. Typically, an initial consultation is scheduled to discuss your concerns and gather a detailed history. This is followed by testing, which can take between 2 and 6 hours, possibly over two or more sessions. Test scoring and analysis come next, followed by a feedback session to review results and recommendations. In the end, you will receive a comprehensive written report with recommendations.

  • How do I prepare my child for seeing a psychologist?

    What you say will depend on your child’s age and previous experience with health care professionals and testing.  Generally, it’s important to convey that this evaluation involves talking and doing word and puzzle tasks, not getting physical examinations or shots.  Children usually need to hear that the purpose of the evaluation is to find ways to help and not to punish.  Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and has eaten a good meal before testing. Make the assessment day special for your child by leaving siblings at home.

  • Are services covered by insurance?

    MNS is not an “in-network” provider for any insurance company, nor do we file claims on your behalf with insurance companies.  If you are planning to use your insurance, you should contact your insurance company directly to see if you can access “out-of-network” benefits. Our services may be reimbursable through your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flex Spending Account (FSA).  Payment for services is requested at the time of service by cash, check, or credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.
